Desert Tortoise Habitat Plant Guide

Creating a tortoise-friendly yard starts with the right plants.

This guide features plants our team recommends to help provide food, shelter, and habitat for desert tortoises here in Southern Nevada. Attached, you'll find a thoughtfully curated list that focuses primarily on regionally native plants, along with a small selection of well-adapted non-native plants that can also play a beneficial role in tortoise habitat.

We're grateful to have this guide approved by the Tortoise Group, an incredible organization dedicated to the conservation and welfare of desert tortoises. Beyond education, they're an invaluable resource for tortoise owners and the community, offering guidance on habitat, health concerns, rescue, and rehoming.

You can also find the Tortoise Group at Mojave Bloom on these following dates:

  • Tortoise Clinic - Friday, 9/4/2026, 9am-1:30pm (Registration through the Tortoise Group required)

  • Mojave Bloom Nursery Anniversary - Saturday, 10/17/2026, 10am-2pm

We hope this guide makes it easier to choose plants that support both your landscape and one of the Mojave Desert's most beloved residents.
