General: Chilopsis linearis, commonly known as Desert Willow, is a deciduous small tree or large shrub native to the arid regions of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Despite its name, it is not related to true willows but gets its name from its long, narrow, willow-like leaves. It produces showy, trumpet-shaped flowers from late spring through summer in shades of pink, lavender, or burgundy, followed by long, slender seedpods. Found naturally along desert washes and streambanks, it is well-adapted to drought and heat, making it a resilient choice for dry landscapes. Traditionally, parts of the plant were used by Indigenous peoples for medicinal purposes.
Designer: In the landscape, Desert Willow offers an airy, open form with twisted branches and shaggy bark that add year-round interest, even when leafless in winter. Its lush, fragrant blooms are highly attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies, making it ideal for pollinator gardens. Often used as a focal point, informal screen, or light shade tree, it softens hardscapes and adds movement and color to xeriscapes. Its sculptural shape and long bloom season provide both structure and seasonal drama in low-water gardens.
Maintenance: Desert Willow is a low-maintenance plant that thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, including sandy, loamy, or even clay conditions. Once established, it requires very little water but benefits from occasional deep watering in summer to prolong flowering. It grows quickly to a mature size of 15–30 feet tall and 10–20 feet wide. Prune in late winter to shape or maintain a strong central trunk and to remove suckers or seedpods. Though generally pest- and disease-free, it can spread mildly in irrigated areas via seed, and the fallen pods can create some seasonal litter.
